Daktilo1984 is the flagship media project of the D84 Association, dedicated to making academic knowledge accessible to the general public and creating a space for rational, informed debate. With its own dedicated team, Daktilo1984 operates across multiple platforms, including a blog, a YouTube channel, and active social media accounts.

Between October 2022 and January 2023, with the support of Fritt Ord, D84 Association launched a comprehensive media campaign focusing on the new Disinformation Law and its far-reaching impacts on media freedom and freedom of speech in Turkey.

Although the Disinformation Law posed a major threat not only to the media but also to individuals’ freedom of expression, it received limited attention in mainstream media. Our platform became the only one that immediately addressed this issue, raising awareness about the risks involved and how much freedom was at stake.

All of this content was published on Daktilo1984’s website and social media platforms, serving as a catalyst for public debate and drawing attention to the restrictive measures being implemented.

The main goal was to raise awareness among the public, policymakers, and the media regarding the Disinformation Law’s potential to undermine freedom of expression, media freedom, and citizens’ right to access information. Through diverse content, we aimed to initiate a social discussion platform to explore solutions to the problems that arise from such restrictive laws.

By supporting this effort, Fritt Ord enabled D84 to be the leading voice in addressing the urgent challenges to free expression in Turkey at a time when few others were discussing it.

 

 

In 2023, we conducted 4 media trainings for 71 academics, experts and intellectuals with the support of the Federal Republic of Germany and FNF to improve their capacity of using media tools, widening their network and public engagement, encouraging them to share their expertise with the public through the media channels. With the networking event held at the end of the training, we brought together academics with each other and with members of the press to strengthen their relationships and hosted 107 guests.

Our participants produced 18 op-eds, 4 newsletters, 5 YouTube broadcasts, and 7 podcasts, which were published on Daktilo1984’s platforms.
