With the support of Stiftung Mercator, 1984 Association (D84, an independent non-profit association based in Türkiye, dedicated to fostering rational public debate and strengthening democratic discourse) invites applications from young academics and experts across Europe to participate in the Intellectual Bridges: Türkiye – Europe Young Public Intellectual Exchange Project. The program aims to encourage young academics and intellectuals to form and foster partnerships across Türkiye and Europe to learn from each other and to strengthen their capacity as public intellectuals.
This program is a unique opportunity for 15 participants to engage with peers from Türkiye, participate in an international training in Amsterdam (25-29 August 2025), and join policy forums in the Balkans (Spring 2026).
A similar training will be organized in November 2025 for young academics and intellectuals based in Türkiye, who will later be brought together with their peers from Europe through a series of online and in-person forums to exchange ideas, co-develop publications, and contribute to cross-border dialogue on key political and social issues.
About the Program
This intensive week-long program brings together emerging scholars and practitioners in the fields of social sciences, humanities, and civic engagement for a unique transnational experience. Hosted in Amsterdam, the program offers a dynamic blend of academic seminars, interactive panels, and institutional visits designed to deepen understanding of pressing political challenges in Europe, Türkiye, and the broader region.
Participants will engage in high-level discussions on topics such as regional developments in Europe and the Middle East, new European security architecture, digital activism, democratic backsliding, environmental governance, and migration. In addition, they will receive practical workshops on public speaking, scientific communication and social media.
The initiative stems from the third mission of academia which is the scientific communication with the greater public for social impact alongside two major roles of research and education, enhancing their role in community engagement and societal development.
The program will feature a wide range of scholars and professionals from institutions such as the Vrije Universiteit and a policy panel with key EU officials, offering participants an unparalleled opportunity to connect theory with practice.
